The 34th edition of the International Energy Workshop (IEW) took place in Abu Dhabi from the 3th to 5th June 2015, hosted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The IEW is one of the leading conferences for the international energy modelling research. This year’s selected papers covered a range of topics including, amongst others, the comparison of low-carbon technologies, climate policy, the integration of variable renewable energies, macroeconomic impacts of energy transitions, financing of sustainable development as well as co-linkages of energy with other resource systems. 

Two members of the wholeSEM consortium participated and presented on wholeSEM research at the IEW 2015. Professor Goran Strbac from Imperial College London was invited as keynote speaker with a presentation on the role and value of flexible technologies in supporting the transition to low-carbon energy systems with high shares of variable renewable generation. Dr Birgit Fais from the UCL Energy Institute presented on the research collaboration with the wholeSEM team from Cambridge University on soft-linking the energy system model UKTM with the resource nexus tool Foreseer UK to evaluate the long-term impacts of the UK’s decarbonisation pathways on water and land use.
